With this orientation, the filter (21) is able to capture more slag than filters made using the standard wrapping method in which the smooth side is oriented inward. The expanded metal can be of various types including, for example, variable expanded metal (VEM) or standard expanded metal (SEM). A flattened expanded metal strip (9) is wrapped into an airbag inflator filter (21) with the strip oriented such that the flattened rough side (17) of the strip is pointing toward the inside diameter (ID) of the filter and the flattened smooth side (15) is pointing towards the outside diameter (OD). The flangeless air filter is comprised of a cone-shaped filter medium, retained between a base and a cap, that is fabricated to remove contaminants and particulate matter from an intake airstream. The base includes a pliable seal that forms an airtight connection between the flangeless air filter and the flat surface of the air intake system. A mounting bracket and fasteners may be used to attach the base to the flat surface, compressing the seal there between. In some embodiments, the mounting bracket may be incorporated into, and made a part of the base. A cap is disposed on a top of the flangeless air filter and configured to direct the intake airstream around the cap and toward the filter medium. An apparatus and method are provided for a flangeless air filter configured to be mounted onto a flat surface within an air intake system of an internal combustion engine. The flangeless air filter is comprised of a cone-shaped filter medium, retained between a base and a cap, that is fabricated to remove contaminants and particulate matter from an intake airstream. The mesh section is attached to the planar panel such that the elongated raised portions form a series of elongated open areas having open ends and an undulation sealing tab of the planar panel is positioned in each of the open ends. The undulation sealing tabs help prevent fluid from leaking or flowing through the open ends when the shaker screen assembly is in use. A shaker screen assembly comprising a support frame and a screen subassembly attached to the support frame is provided. The screen subassembly includes a planar panel that includes a plurality of undulation sealing tabs, and a mesh section attached to the planar panel. The mesh section includes a series of undulations, each undulation including an elongated base portion and an elongated raised portion. The mesh section is attached to the planar panel such that the elongated raised portions form a series of elongated open areas having open ends and an undulation sealing tab of the planar panel is positioned in each of the open ends. The undulation sealing tabs help prevent fluid from leaking or flowing through the open ends when the shaker screen assembly is in use.
